A Divorce Turns Ugly When Woman Burns Her Wedding Dress AND Her Spouse's Belongings!

A Divorce Turns Ugly When Woman Burns Her Wedding Dress AND Her Spouse's Belongings!

According to a number of recent studies, the divorce rate in the United States is a lot higher than people probably think it is. As of the U.S. Census of 2010, it was revealed that approximately 41% of first marriages tend to end with divorce proceedings. More than that, 60% of second marriages end in divorce, and an incredible 73% of third marriages do, as well. Interestingly, the vast majority of divorces take place with couples who are 20 to 24 years old. 36.6% of women and 38.8% of men who fall into this age range wind up getting divorced sooner rather than later.

Sometimes, marriages end on amicable terms. Two people slowly realize that they're not as compatible as they originally thought so they agree to go their separate ways. It happens, but it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Other times, however, things take a decidedly darker turn. This is also the type of situation that is, sadly, all too common.

Having a celebration after your contentious divorce has been finalized is common for many people. In fact, it can often be seen as cathartic – it marks the end of one period of your life and the beginning of a new, hopefully much better one. This is the mentality that one Texas woman was operating under when she recently held a garage sale to get rid of anything and everything that had to do with her unhappy marriage. However, she also took things a bit farther than normal and made the local news as a result.

Don't Mess With Texas

Briana Barksdale of Texas was married to a local man for two years before her divorce was finalized on January 31, 2018. Just a week later, she decided to hold what she called a "Divorce Garage Sale" with a simple goal – she was trying to get her "worthless, cheating, abusive husband" out of her life for good. She posted about the event on Craigslist and enjoyed a higher-than-average turnout as a result.

But what those people saw when they showed up to her house on that Saturday morning involved a LOT more than just a garage sale.

Not only did Barksdale keep true to her word and sell a lot of her ex-husband's belongings at the yard sale, but she also took the unusual step of burning both her wedding dress AND some of the more symbolic possessions that he used to own! She said that the event was dedicated to "every woman who has ever been in a relationship that was abusive, that hurt and that they definitely shouldn't have stayed in" for as long as they did.

After burning the wedding dress and continuing to post about it on social media, Barksdale found that people were driving from all over the area to come and see it. What was previously just a sad, depressing, personal experience turned into an incredible session in group therapy – one that was quite successful, as well.

It's important to note that Barksdale's ex-husband not only reportedly cheated on her a number of times during their relationship, but he was also violent as well. In fact, he is currently serving probation in their local area for assaulting one of his family members. To say that it's terrific that Barksdale got out of the relationship when she did is something of an understatement.

In a lot of ways, this can serve as an important lesson to all of us. Yes, everyone feels like they're in a relationship that they shouldn't be in from time to time. Yes, divorce itself is incredibly common, and it is often a painful experience for everyone involved. But this is only true if you allow it to be. Learn from Briana Barksdale's example – she was able to take one terrible moment and turn it into a group therapy session on a massive scale, touching the lives of countless members of her community at the same time.

Just be careful with the matches if you're going to give this a try yourself.
